2:20 pm - Make fun of Bush--with his help!
|
Through a completely foolish mistake, georgewbush.com is currently allowing people to make custom posters will almost any* slogans they wish. Check it out (yes, too lazy to look up the proper linky code): http://www.georgewbush.com/btl/CustomPoster.aspx?type=color
Counsel, I got your email but have been horrible about replying (obviously). I'm hoping to do that in some unexistent free time and am still alive!
*So far, I've discovered the words "suck," "fascist," and "evil" are not allowed. But there are still plenty of good options out there!

9:28 am - I just wanna bang on de drum all day
|
Leaving work yesterday, I stepped out onto the street corner (insert hooker jokes here) and was suddenly witness to a large motorcade, complete with at least 5 motorcycle policemen, 3 black SUVs, and 2 limos. At first I thought it was Sharon, in town to meet with Bush, until one of the limos sped by and I recognized the large white head inside, complete with scowl, to be that of Dick Cheney, going home. And I felt an odd kinship with him, not only because we left work at the same time, but because we both don't really do crap on our jobs, just bide our time until the next step comes along. He also went to UW-Madison for a Ph.D. in political science. Are we Meant To Be?
I'm starting my housesitting gig on Thursday or Friday of this week. Saturday I went over for an initiation, which lasted over an hour, considerably longer than the 15 minutes I was expecting. Was it really necessary to show me where the rag towels are? Hmmm, it might be unreasonable to suspec that everyone has the same blase attitude that I have about such things. Regardless, the house is lovely--1/4 of a block off Lincoln Park, 5 minute walk to Eastern Market. I already have visions of baking peach muffins dancing in my head. But, sadly, one of the two cats I am taking care of ran away last week. Ruh-roh! This means, of course, that I will at the head of a search and rescue mission, although someone else has been authorized to make life or death decisions should the cat reappear in a mangled-up sort of way.
Work? It still sucks.

This graphic alone is reason enough for Bush's defeat next year. Don't wuss out on us now, Dems.
Meanwhile, I was invited to an "event" in Bar Harbor, Maine. MAINE! Do I live anywhere near Maine? Ahh, not so much.
Cupcake time.
ETA: This morning at 11:15 my phone rang. It was the woman with whom I've been trying to schedule a meeting for five weeks. (And keep in mind that I'm leaving in 4.) And she met with me at 11:40 and was the gigantic bitch I expected her to be.

Several places (the Times, the Post, etc.) have reported in the last couple of days about the new devilry on the part of the GOP--redrawing congressional district lines again to strengthen the party, primarily in Colorado and Texas. Ooo, they are evil, precioussss.
Of course my favorite part of this story is that the Dems are threatening to retaliate by redrawing the districts in New Mexico and Oklahoma. Whooo, my peeps!
Yeah, I know that was boring and pointless to 99.9% of you.

Since Katharine Hepburn remains the most famous alumna produced by my alma mater, I will share this little story: KH was the 1985 centennial year commencement speaker at BMC. During graduation, she stayed in an on-campus dorm which, at the time, was co-ed, with men from Haverford living there as well. One as those men grew up to be a professor of mine and reported being in the bathroom one morning when who should walk in but KH. Who freaked out that there was a man in the bathroom. Poor guy proceeded to get a major tongue-lashing from an old woman in her bathrobe who was still capable of kicking a lot of ass.

The 2003 edition of the Dept. of Edumacation publication on which I used to work was released publically about two weeks, and this morning was the association/media briefing. Since I'm an old pro on the subject, I was asked to perform the demanding task of running the PowerPoint presentation, which, honestly, I was never trusted to do when I first worked here. (One of the perks of getting an M.A., I guess--I'm now trustworthy with a space bar.) So this morning I showed up at work; wearing the one suit that I brought with me and which, turns out, has a hole in the skirt (how did that happen?); put on my CVS-purchased hose in my office, and went off to flip slides. And promptly messed up. D'oh! It wasn't exactly my fault, since the commissioner was flustered and didn't follow the script, but it was slightly embarrassing to have to go back a bullet. Anyway, I just got an email from my contact containing this: Thank you for turning the pages today on the Condition of Education presentation. masterful job. Let's keep in mind that I was in charge of pressing the space bar! A monkey could that just about as well as I did. If I were actually a regular employee here, I would probably be annoyed at the triviality of it all, but instead I am amused at the bureaucracy and its silliness.
Off to Trader Joe's so I can get a picnic dinner for tomorrow night's Emmylou Harris concert. Wheee!

Outstanding questions from Mug:
1. What's your dream job? Yikes. I don't exactly know. I really like school and learning and being dorky generally, which is why the going to graduate school and potentially becoming a professor is kind of a nice thing. Also, the hours are fabulous. But, I also like variety and the sense of actually making progress, moving forward, so a job like the one I have this summer (working for a nonprofit on policy stuff) is kind of appealing too. I'm hoping to somehow combine the abstract desires into some sort of ideal job but haven't figure out the exact shape of it yet.
2. If you could move to any Canadian province, which would it be? The Maritime provinces seem cool, but I know at heart that I am a Great Plains/middle of the continent kind of gal, so it would be someplace like Manitoba or Saskatchewan.
3. What do you like about D.C.? I like that D.C. is the place that I, as a young nerd that I was, wanted to live when I grew up, and I actually accomplished that. I like that a lot of people here are similar to me in their nerdiness and their fascination with politics. I like that there's a lot to do, that it's a pretty city that I know well, and that everyday I see the Capitol and Washington Monument and still think that's cool. And, of course, I adore my friends and family who are here. However, there are a lot of things I don't like about DC, and overall I'm glad I don't live here on a full-time basis anymore.
4. If you could eat anything right now, what would it be? A chocolate cream cheese scone, which I've never actually had but I'm craving both chocolate and cream cheese.
5. If you could teleport anyone to be in the room with you right now, who would it be? Since I've seen a lot of my friends and family lately, I'm going to pick my friend Laura, whom I haven't seen in almost two years but is always funny and makes me happy.
If anyone wants some questions, just give me a comment.

In less than 12 hours, I will be on the road to Washington. I haven't started packing yet. Eek! Right now I'm in the dreading the big drive stage, frantically trying to get everything done that should have been done weeks ago, cleaning out the fridge, wondering what the hell I'm going to were to work for 10 weeks. I'm also sad to be leaving my pretty little apartment during the prettiest time of the year. Sigh. Now need to figure out if I'm staying in Cleveland or in Pittsburgh tomorrow night. Everybody hope I drive safely!

I've finally gotten off the alumnae listserve, but not before I got the little gem quoted below. It's things like this that made me hate that place and drove me to the mighty UW.
In response to an question about why she doesn't like Mexico, In 1996 I went to visit people who had formerly been neighbors of ours in CA. We started by joining them on their own vacation in Acapulco. The resorts-next-to-squatters-quarters thing was distressing. A child played a *comb* as a musical instrument in his effort to beg/busk for money. Then we went back to their home in Mexico city. The gated-community-next-to-slum thing was terribly distressing!
I'm not saying I prefer hiding povery [sic], mind you. I'm just saying the overwhelming squalor at every turn makes me not want to be there at all...
*bites tongue* Instead of making snide comments about this particular individual being a gigantic bitch, I will point out that she failed her thesis and had to rewrite it. Ha! Someday the revolution will come.
Meanwhile, I have to go up to campus, turn in my final paper, and, oh yeah, officially finish my work for an M.A.

11:49 am - On the lam
|
From the Oklahoma City newspaper's coverage of the Texas Democrats holed up in southern Oklahoma:
Rep. Rick Noriega of Houston said Oklahoma lawmakers had invited the Texans to visit the Oklahoma Capitol. Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry said he would welcome Texas lawmakers.
Henry said, "We're glad they are spending their money in Oklahoma, and they have already provided a substantial boost to the Ardmore economy."
The whole story talks about how great it is that the legislators ran to Oklahoma instead of, like, Arkansas. Yay that we have unified state government under the Democrats! Also, this part was particularly amusing to me:
The legislators looked pretty much like Oklahomans, except for that star pinned to their lapels.
Is it necessary to point out that Texans are human beings too? Crazy, crazy OKC. This reminds me of two things: a court case a couple years back, which eventually was decided by the Supreme Court, about where exactly the border between Oklahoma and Texas lies and when one of the OK governors called out the National Guard to defend the border. Hee!
*misses home*

Yesterday I signed up for the alma mater's alumnae listserve. My request was approved around 2 pm yesterday afternoon and so far I've received 130 emails. Unfrigginbelievable. I of course asked to be taken off the list, but that hasn't happened yet.
Meanwhile, by 5 pm today I have to turn in a 20 page paper. What page am I on? Page 1.
ETA: In the past 10 minutes, since I posted this, 6 more emails. Don't these people have lives?
